The Scam Message Looks Real Now: How Zimbabwean Youth Can Protect Their Money, Phones and Online Identity

The message arrived at 9:14am on a Tuesday. It looked like it came from EcoCash. The logo was right. The colours were right. It said: 'Your account has been flagged. Enter your PIN to verify and avoid suspension.' Thirty seconds later, $200 was gone. Online scams targeting young Zimbabweans are not new. But they are getting significantly more sophisticated — and the consequences are landing on people who can least afford them.

The Most Common Scams Targeting Zimbabwean Youth Right Now

Fake job offers. A message arrives on WhatsApp or LinkedIn offering a work-from-home job paying $300–$800 per month for simple tasks — liking posts, rating products, or completing surveys. The catch: you must first deposit money to 'unlock' your earnings or register for a package. The money disappears. The job does not exist. Crypto investment groups. A WhatsApp group shows members posting screenshots of large returns — $500 turned into $3,000 in 7 days. A recruiter (who is part of the scam) invites you in. You invest. The group disappears. OTP phishing. Someone calls or messages you claiming to be from EcoCash, InnBucks, or a bank. They say there is a problem with your account and ask you to share the OTP that just arrived on your phone. The moment you share it, your account is drained. Fake ZIMRA or government messages. A message claims you have uncollected funds, a tax refund, or a government grant. You are asked to pay a small processing fee. There is no fund. There is no grant. Romance scams. A profile on Facebook or Instagram begins a conversation, builds a relationship over weeks or months, then eventually asks for money — a medical emergency, a flight ticket, a business problem. The person does not exist.

The Rules That Protect You

Rule 1: No legitimate organisation will ever ask for your OTP, PIN, or password. Not EcoCash. Not your bank. Not InnBucks. Not WhatsApp support. Not anyone. An OTP is a one-time password that only you should ever see. The moment you share it, you have handed over the keys to your account. Rule 2: If you have to pay money to receive money, it is a scam. Every single time. No legitimate employer, grant, lottery, or investment requires a deposit before you receive earnings. Rule 3: Verify through the official channel, not the one provided. If you receive a message from 'EcoCash' or 'Econet' about an account issue, do not call the number in the message. Open the official app or call the number on the back of your SIM card. Rule 4: Returns that sound impossible are impossible. If an investment promises 100% returns in 7 days, it is not an opportunity — it is a theft machine. Real investments grow slowly.

What To Do If You Have Been Scammed

If you have lost money to a scam, act immediately: 1. Call your mobile money provider's emergency line and report the transaction — some providers can reverse recent transactions 2. Change your PIN and password on all accounts immediately 3. Report the incident to POTRAZ and the Zimbabwe Republic Police Cybercrime Unit 4. Do not pay anyone who contacts you offering to 'recover' your lost funds — this is a second scam targeting people who have already been victimised 5. Warn your contacts — scammers often use compromised accounts to target the victim's friends and family next

The Bigger Picture: Digital Safety Is a Life Skill

As Zimbabwe's internet economy grows — more Starlink connections, more online jobs, more digital payments — the value of what can be stolen digitally is increasing. Your EcoCash wallet, your Payoneer account, your online banking login, your social media accounts — these are now worth real money to criminals. Digital safety is not a technical topic. It is a life skill, as important as knowing not to share your house keys with a stranger. At KuWeX Studios, we build secure digital systems for businesses and educate our clients on cybersecurity basics.
